Mark Esper served as Secretary of Defense from 2019-2020 and Secretary of the Army from 2017-2019. Esper is known for establishing the Department of Defense Board on Diversity and Inclusion, which was tasked with providing recommendations “to improve racial and ethnic diversity and inclusion in the U.S. military.” Esper's keynotes draw from his corporate, military, and government experiences to inspire top-level leadership in all fields.

Seema Verma served as Administrator of Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services from 2017-2021. Why did only a few Asian countries learn the right lessons from SARS and MERS? Virtual events are nothing new, but with COVID-19 and stay-at-home orders around the world, virtual events have become the way forward for the time being. This has forced many event professionals to radically shift their mindsets and planning processes to embrace the virtual format and everything that comes with it.

From researching the endless and extensive options of virtual event platforms, to deciding on and organizing event content, to vetting keynote speakers, pivoting from a live to virtual event will take more planning than many think. With over 60+ combined years of experience working in the events industry and placing speakers, members of the Worldwide Speakers Group staff are here to help.

We sat down with Kristy Kalo and Nanette Hinkle, two of WWSG's Vice Presidents of Sales, and asked them about how to organize event content and pick speakers for virtual events.

With so many events and conferences being held virtually right now, it can be a bit daunting to think about session content and speakers. Where do we even start?

Kristy: First, think about your goals for the event. Have they changed now that the event is being held digitally? Do you want to inform your audience, motivate and inspire them, address an issue or problem within the organization, provide an outlet for people to listen and share views about a specific topic? All of this information will help in guiding you towards the right fit when it comes to the format of the event, the type of speaker you should have and the best platform for hosting the program.

Once we’ve identified our goals, how do we organize the content so it’s impactful and absorbed by our attendees?

Nanette: Great question. Research shows that online attendee engagement stays highest if the time spent at a computer is three consecutive hours or less. So, you may want to consider hosting your event over the course of several days and then rolling out additional bonus content following the event instead of hosting one or two marathon days.

Should those sessions be different from what we plan for in person events?

Kristy: Potentially – keep in mind that content has to be much more dynamic when presented through a computer screen. Interactive aspects, like word clouds, voting, sharing appropriate photos and other interactive breaks in the talking will help keep attendees engaged. Additionally, it is important to incorporate special moments into the program because attendees will be missing the in person networking and interactions.

Once we’ve identified which sessions we’re going to hold and how they will be organized, how do we select the speakers?

Nanette: Think about your specific audience and what will drive them to log on to their screen and watch someone. Would a speaker with great name recognition get them excited to attend? Are they interested in specific content? We’ve seen a lot of success stories from groups who hosted a well-known speaker who gives the attendees a good reason to attend, similar to the idea of a headliner for live events. Alternatively, if you have a group who is experiencing a certain challenge or needs certain information to do their jobs well, a speaker with expertise in that specific content is a great option. For instance, if its important to know how the election or certain legislation will impact business, a political speaker would be able to shed light on those topics or if your organization is facing a big change, a speaker who discusses disruption would be impactful.

Are all speakers equipped to present virtually?

Kristy: Not at all, and just because someone is a wonderful presenter in person, that does not always translate into a dynamic virtual presentation. You need to look for someone with experience presenting virtually. We will help you identify speakers that are gifted in this particular type of presenting and often we can provide you with recent feedback from other groups that have hosted them recently or we may have video clips that can show a brief part of a virtual presentation to give you a sense of how they will appear on screen.

Once we’ve selected our speakers, what comes next?

Nanette: Like Kristy said, we’ll help you find the perfect speakers to accomplish your goals and needs for this new virtual world of events. Once you know who those speakers are, we can help provide you with great tools to promote the event, sometimes speakers are able to film short videos that can be sent to attendees leading up to the event or we can share content that will generate interest in the event. And just like the live events we handle, we will be providing support leading up to and during your program. Our event coordinators are well versed in various on-line presentation platforms and can work with you to set up rehearsals to ensure the lighting, sound, computer angle, etc. are all perfect. Below are a few Frequently Asked Questions on how to accomplish your event’s goals virtually, and ensure your virtual event is successful.

How do I guarantee my Virtual Event is Successful?

The answer to this questions remains the same as if the event was live and in-person: Engage your audience with a well-fit speaker, who delivers and shares Content that enhances your event.

In general, have your sessions be an appropriate length (how long would you want to sit in your chair for?), offer ways for your audience to connect with the content (live discussions, real-time polls & surveys), carve-in breaks between sessions and DO NOT forget that the goal of your event should be to entertain and forge a lasting impact on your audience.

In the face of this global pandemic, people around the world are turning inward to find ways to help. Conservationists, photographers, and co-founders of SeaLegacy, Cristina Mittermeier and Paul Nicklen have decided to use this time to utilize their vast social media reaches to educate and share their expert knowledge on the ocean through stories in something they are calling “Ocean School.”

As an accomplished historian, commentator, and keynote speaker, Niall Ferguson has dedicated his career to linking the past, present and future. Over the years, the Milbank Family Senior Fellow at the Hoover Institution, Stanford University, and senior faculty fellow of the Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs at Harvard, has shared his knowledge on global politics and economics with audiences worldwide. With erudition, eloquence and humor, Ferguson specializes in putting today’s economic shifts, social change and political disruption into historical perspective, using the past as a roadmap to the future.

On Tuesday, March 17^th Ferguson is releasing a new series on PBS. Niall Ferguson’s Networld explores the origins and power of social media networks. Written and hosted by Ferguson, this three episode series is inspired by his best selling book The Square and the Tower: Networks and Power, from the Freemasons to Facebook. It highlights the history of social networks along with the technological advances society has made. According to Niall Ferguson:

“In order to truly understand the influence and power of social networks, it’s essential to look into the past. The advent of fake news, corporate monopolies and government interference is nothing new. Only by understanding history can we find solutions to the issues facing our new ‘networld’ today like information war and election interference.” (Deadline)

By studying significant cultural movements, like the Reformation, 17th century witch hunting and the American Revolution, Ferguson addresses the power of social networks even before the introduction and influence of social media.

Each episode features interviews with experienced network theorists, social scientists and data analysts. These interviews include Eric Schmidt, Google’s former CEO and executive chairman; Antonio Garcia Martinez, author, tech entrepreneur and former Facebook product manager; Stanley McChrystal, former head of Joint Special Operations Command in Iraq; and Alex Stamos, former head of security at Facebook.

Powerful Women in Women's History Month

Since 1987, the United States has dedicated the month of March to honor women and the substantial, yet often overlooked, contributions they have made to society. The celebration of Women’s History Month has definitely evolved over the years. Its start can be traced back to the first International Women’s Day in 1911 and then to the first Women’s History Week organized by the school district of Sonoma, California in 1978, which was considered to be widely successful for its time.

As many Americans began to acknowledge the need and importance of such a celebration, President Jimmy Carter issued the first presidential proclamation making the week of March 8th, 1980 (International Women's Day) National Women’s History Week. This act then inspired the National Women’s History Project to petition Congress and in 1987 Pub. L. 100-9 was officially passed which designated the entire month of March as Women’s History Month.

Over the years, Women’s History Month has transformed into not just a celebration but also an international call to action for women’s equality. Though we still have a long way to go, it’s hard to ignore the immense progress made over the years. That progress is highlighted in the 2020 theme for the month. “Valiant Women of the Vote” honors the 100th anniversary of the ratification of the 19th Amendment, which granted women the right to vote. The theme is for “the brave women who fought to win suffrage right for women, and the women who continue to fight for the voting rights of others.”

We sat down with Shelly Sharer, one of WWSG’s Senior Vice President of Sales, with over 20+ years of experience placing speakers, and asked her about her long-standing partnership with Gartner, Inc. and how she builds lasting relationships with clients.

What are the differences between a first-time client reaching out vs. a long-term partner like Gartner?

Shelly: A first-time client reaching out is my opportunity to gain their trust and make them feel 100% confident that I am the best professional resource in terms of sourcing a keynote speaker. I accomplish this by sharing WWSG’s expert credentials, my seasoned experiences and then reference some of WWSG’s prominent keynote speakers and clients. I invest my time to learn about their organization, their successes and challenges and most importantly the event, digging deep to understand all of the parameters they are facing in order for me to identify the best elite speaker. It’s crucial to develop a rapport during this first contact and make clear the advantages in partnering with WWSG. Remembering that I only get “one chance to make a first impression”

As a WWSG long term partner, the approach is a bit different as I’m an established professional resource and I've invested in developing a long term history. Thus, it’s my commitment to add value every time I interface with this client. Things such as; anticipating what they are going to need before they ask for it, advocating on their behalf behind the scenes and constantly pushing the boundaries to tweak best practices based upon their changing needs etc. As their partner and advocate, I’m a part of the team and make it a priority to know all of the members. I accomplish this by staying in close contact, responding immediately, presenting the best roster of speakers to contribute to their success, attend events and organize and host team dinners while onsite to consistently build a rapport.

What does a client like Gartner look for in a speaker?

Shelly: This really depends on the conference itself. At Gartner Conferences, they seek presenters who understand the attendees’ roles and unique challenges. They seek speakers who can energize their thinking and help them transform their mission-critical priorities into business results. I work with each individual Program Manager to understand their needs and then recommend speakers that I believe will best align.

Gartner only wants engaging, timely, fresh and leading edge speakers who expertly deliver relevant knowledge that leaves the audience with tangible takeaways and actionable solutions. It’s extremely important for me to expertly discern the speaking engagement, recommend wisely, and share my input when discussing a speaker selection.

Once the contracts are signed how do you maintain white glove service?

Shelly: White glove service is an absolute MUST. Thus, communication between the client, the events team and the WWSG team is crucial. We work in ‘lock step’ and address any potential issues that we see on the horizon in real time, acting accordingly and with precision to address any and all concerns if they arise. We have timelines, fail safes and checklists in place to assist in organization, keeping everyone informed and in alignment.

How are you involved on the day of the event?

Shelly: I am not involved on the day of the event given that my client has a tremendous amount of details to attend to. It’s our job to make sure they have everything they need in advance of the event date so that we don’t need to be involved on the day of. However, If there are any issues, Gartner has the direct mobile numbers for our team and to the speakers on site and we will work in real time no matter the day or time to help them solve any speaker issues.

How do you follow up with the client after the event in order to continue your longstanding partnership?

Shelly: I follow up with my clients within a few days of the event. I reach out via email to assess how the overall event went and to get feedback on the keynote speaker and WWSG’s performance. Ideally, it’s best to have a ‘live’ conversation with the client; however, many are so busy post event. I always ask for a call to discuss but defer to the client as I don’t want to add more to their ‘plate’ if they would prefer to simply answer my email. The important thing here is always reaching out for feedback as this is another great ‘touch point’ with your client.

Partnerships are incredibly important at the Worldwide Speakers Group and that does not end when the booking process and events are over. Catalyst for Climate Conversations

Primed by record-breaking heat, a prolonged drought and windy conditions, Australia’s southern coast has been ravaged with devastating brushfires since September, forcing thousands out of their homes. The fires have claimed 33 innocent lives and has destroyed over 3,000 homes. With 26.2 million acres of land decimated, millions of animals have been under threat, wounded or killed. This extreme event attribute has caused climate scientist and conservationists to speak out on climate change’s role in exacerbating natural disasters. WWSG is proud of the work our elite Speakers have done for our environment and we continue to assist in ‘raising up’ these powerful voices as they fight against environmental catastrophes like Australia’s wildfires, caused by climate change. 

Cristina Mittermeier - One of the most influential female photographers in the world and a powerful voice in conservation photography. Cristina began her career as a Marine Biologist. She soon discovered that she could better advocate for the planet through the lens of her camera than she could with data on spreadsheets. In 2005 she founded the prestigious International League of Conservation Photographers (ILCP) which works to support environmental conservation through ethical photography. Cristina also co-founded the conservation society SeaLegacy with her partner, Paul Nicklen which is a collective of photographers who focus on cleaner, healthier oceans.

Paul Nicklen – As a co-founder of SeaLegacy, Paul is one of the world’s most acclaimed nature photographers, an acclaimed polar specialist, author, conservationist, National Geographic Fellow, and a regular contributor to National Geographic Magazine with 20 completed stories to date. He is also highly respected by the conservation community for his outspoken work, collaborating with scientists, filmmakers, conservationists and explorers to create awareness and inspire action for global issues like climate change. Paul has even been awarded the Natural Resources Defense Council BioGems Visionary Award and most recently, was bestowed an honorary PhD at the University of Victoria, for the impact his photography has had on climate change.

Jane Goodall - Hailed as the world’s most important conservationist and animal welfare activist, Dr. Goodall is most famous for her 45-year study of the social and familial interactions of wild chimpanzees. Knowing that local communities are key to protecting chimpanzees she founded the Jane Goodall Institute and redefined traditional conservation with an approach that recognizes the central role people play in the well-being of animals and habitat. Then in 1991, when a group of young people confided their own deep concerns, she invited them to help start Roots & Shoots, a program at work with young people in 100 countries to foster the informed generation of conservation leaders our world so urgently needs.

Newt Gingrich – A longtime advocate for environmentalism and endangered species, Newt Gingrich taught the first environmental studies courses at West Georgia College in the 1970’s. Since then he has been a major proponent for environmentalism. Whether it is working with Nancy Pelosi on a campaign to address climate change, Co-writing A Contract with the Earth about bipartisan environmentalism, or advocating for endangered species through his company Gingrich 360, Newt Gingrich has been an outspoken voice for conservation.

These speakers have used their powerful voices and years of experience to shed a light on these important environmental challenges, not just in Australia but for all the disastrous causes of Climate Change. Cristina Mittermeier once described the job of a conservation photographer as “creating images to inspire people to change behavior” and commit to a public obligation to reverse the impact of climate change.
